The Journey of OSIM Foundation in Tanzania

Founded in 2018, OSIM Foundation focuses on improving maternal and child health, promoting sanitary pad initiatives, nutritional programs, and empowering women in remote communities of Arusha, Tanzania.

The foundation emphasizes health education, proactive health-seeking behaviors, and addressing poverty through socio-economic empowerment programs in marginalized areas.

Meet Pendo, a Maasai woman and the visionary behind OSIM Foundation. Her journey began with a master's research project on birth preparedness and complication readiness among pregnant women in Longido District, Arusha, Tanzania.

Pendo's research revealed alarming rates of maternal and under-five mortalities due to limited access to healthcare facilities. Pregnant women often faced long journeys on foot, leading to home deliveries or reliance on traditional birth attendants.

Having overcome cultural barriers herself, Pendo understands the challenges faced by Maasai women and girls, where early marriage practices often hinder educational opportunities.

During her studies, Pendo partnered with Melfard Sorell, an American advocate moved by the struggles of Maasai girls in managing menstrual hygiene. Together, they initiated programs to provide sanitary pads, undergarments, and soap to girls in need.

Their collaboration expanded into projects serving marginalized women in remote regions, aiming to enhance multidimensional health outcomes and inspire hope for a brighter future.
